Progress on our current project is going very well. We have removed the first section of roof, which had very rotten timber shakes, the old battens were removed and the disintegrated sarking. Fortunately we are replacing the roof before the customer started getting internal problems, which in this case was most probably imminent. All roof rafter timbers are in good condition and in no need of any repair or replacement. The customer has told us that during the winter the house is very cold, and during the summer very warm. Therefore we are filling the whole roof space with as much Knauf insulation batts as we can, all dormer sections and walls are getting filled. As well as the insulation which will greatly help the buidlings overall performance we are installing Bradford Proctor sarking. Key points of the sarking are: – Reduces the risk of condensation formation inside the building frame – Improves energy efficiency by reducing draughts allowing insulation to work more effective – Protects the building frame from decay by reducing the entry of wind driven rain and dust. After the sarking is installed we then fixed our 75mm x 25mm Oregan treated roof battens spaced evenly to allow for a minimum head lap of our slate of 90mm. As you can see we have had a good start at installing the 508mm x 254mm Canadian Glendyne roofing slate, even crafting a detailed diamond pattern to the front of the roof.
